VHF SATELLITE COLLARS FOR ELEPHANTS
One of our responsibilities as Christ followers is caring for God’s creation and as a ministry we do so by funding and offering hands-on assistance with conservation projects of some of Africa’s most endangered species including rhino, elephant, wild dog, and cheetah.
This past November and this coming summer (2018) we have been invited to help collar twelve elephants - eight matriarchs and four bulls - with VHF satellite collars. In an effort to preserve the world’s largest land mammals, the collars will monitor elephant behavior on the reserve. This data will assist in management strategies, social dynamics, and the impact of safari vehicles and walking safaris, as well as help with anti-poaching efforts of both the elephant population and the critically endangered rhino.
The cost to place a collar is approximately $4,500 per elephant. This covers vet fees for tranquilizing the animal, helicopter for locating and darting them, and the VHF Satellite Collar.
