In our modern world, navigation around the globe is as simple as asking a smart phone to find your location and proceeding to follow turn-by-turn directions to get to your destination. Before smart phones and GPS's, we would download directions from mapquest. Before Mapquest, we had to know how to read an actual map. And if all else failed, we stopped and did the unthinkable; we asked for directions. In today's age of technology it is rare if we get lost. Yet if we do, we may find ourselves scurrying around trying to find a safe way home.
Many of God's creatures have their own built-in directional systems and today we will look to the Puffin and its amazing sense of navigation.
The Puffin may look like a penguin, but, unlike the penguin, Puffins can fly. Amazingly, the Puffin can flap its wings 400 times per minute to reach speeds of 55 mph (88 km/h)!
The Puffin's wings beat so fast that this fascinating bird looks like a black and white football flying through the air.
How they find their way back to their nesting colonies remains a mystery. It is not known if the Puffin uses smell, reference points, the earth's magnetic field, or maybe even the stars to find its way home - yet it still manages to do so. God has given this strange bird the sense necessary to find its way safely home.
Navigating through a spiritual world which is often cloaked in darkness can be intimidating and make you feel as though you're lost. Until you reach out and accept the gift of salvation that Christ offers, you are wondering through life with no direction.
Finding our way home to Jesus, the light of the world, is truly as simple as acknowledging that we are sinners. He died on the cross for our sins and He is the Son of the living God. If you reach out to Him, He will bring you safely home to His path for your life. Unfortunately, lost people can't see their way home because Satan leads them through a dark world of fear and doubt, BUT we know that Jesus is the light of the world.
Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”
Just as the Puffin may navigate through dark to find its way home, we may look to Jesus as He shines to show us the way to His grace. Perhaps you could become a point of light for someone to follow toward a redemptive relationship with Christ. What can you do today to become that light for someone who may not truly know the way home in Christ?
Respond in Prayer
Gracious Father, Creator of everything, thank You for the guidance of the Holy Spirit who lives within me. I do feel, at times, that this world is cloaked in darkness. There are many decisons I need to make that I know will honor You, but they fall away as I get distracted by the darkness around me. Please continue to be the guiding light and show me the way to follow You through the darkness. I pray that You can use me today to be the light for someone else to see You shining through my life. Thank you for loving me Lord, unconditionally, no matter what.
