Have you ever tried to get someone's attention in a crowded room? Imagine trying to find your child in a stadium of cheering fans simply by the sound of their gentle voice. Today we will look at an animal that has mastered their communication skills in a crowd.
Along the Namibian and South African coast, there are 24 colonies of seals with a population of about 650,000 animals.
At Cape Cross alone there are between 80,000 to 100,000 seals! WOW!
In the cacophony of barking seals how on earth could a mother seal find her baby?
In this chaos God designed something quite brilliant.
Each baby seal has a distinct call that only its mother can recognize. By using this specialized call, the pup and its mom are easily reunited through the commotion.
Life in our own world is also filled with noise and distractions.
-Restaurants have TV's
-Roads have billboards
-Waiting rooms have magazines
-TVs have commercials
-EVERYONE has a smart phone
There is so much 'noise' in our lives that we may miss the faint and distinct whisper from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In the old testament, God showed us that He doesn't always use a megaphone or part the seas in order to get our attention.
1 King 19:11-12
And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.
God spoke to Elijah in a still small voice and He may be trying to get our attention the same way. He has a distinct message for us. A message saying,"I love you. I died for you. I will always love you no matter what."
Unfortunately in our noisey lives, this unique call from the Creator of the Universe is at times drowned out by the chatter all around us.
What are you doing to hone your hearing to receive what the Lord may be trying to tell you? Are you taking a little time to read God's Word? Are you taking time to pray and, more importantly, to listen to what He may have to say?
What could you do today to help move toward God's distinct call in your life? Move through the noise and find peace in Christ. Another beautiful way God communicates through His creation.
Responding in Prayer
(Before you begin praying, take a deep breath)
Gracious Father in heaven I come to you today because I feel like my the world around me is always loud. I find it difficult to find a quiet space to hear your gentle voice. I come to you today because I have found a quiet place right now to spend time with you. As we spend this special time together I seek your heart and will try to take time each day to listen to what you would have me do with my time. I love you Lord and am thankful you continue to try to get my attention through all the clutter in my daily life. Thank you for loving me with such grace.
